Dear Parents 18 September 2015

To celebrate the end of term 3 we have voted to have a shared lunch on the last day of term. Can you please try and send something in that is healthy otherwise some children eat only sweet food and feel sick all afternoon.  Children will need to bring a paper/plastic plate to eat off and their drink bottle.

To reward good behaviour this term, children are allowed to bring in a game of their choice on the last day. This can be a board game, an activity to do or make or an electronic device.  Electronic devices and anything valuable will be locked up in my cupboard before school, at morning tea and at lunchtime for safe keeping.

We have been earning/losing points this term for our behaviour.  I will email you if your child has not earned enough points to bring in a game of their choice.  The points were based on a set of rules that we agreed at the beginning of 2015 and have been using all year. They are around using our manners, being kind and helpful, treating property and others respectfully, being prepared (eg having a pencil, ruler, etc), completing our class and homework, having a good attitude, keeping a tidy classroom, sorting out disagreements amicably and taking responsibility for ourselves.

We will be watching a movie in the afternoon so if your child has something suitable to bring in (no PG ratings please) we will vote for our favourite to watch.

If you have any questions, please email m.fearon@waikanae.school.nz or come and see me.

Have a good week and a fantastic, relaxing holiday.

Kind regards, Michelle Fearon

Term 2 dates and news

Dear Parent/Caregiver 4 May 2015

As part of our Pou artwork starting this term, we need some information from you to help the children create a piece of art that means something to them and their family. Pou panels represent people and ancestors, acknowledging the association between people (tangata) and the land (whenua).

They will be creating four pieces of art over the year relating to their heritage, personal beliefs, whanau (family) and whakapapa (genealogy).  They will be using symbols (eg koru) and traditional Maori art as a basis and using a variety of textiles.

If you have any information or items of relevance that children can bring in to help with this artwork, it would be much appreciated. Items could be photos to copy, a family tree, the name of their iwi, their mihimihi, etc. Please find attached a sheet  to help you with your genealogy. Please complete as best you can and return to school. We will work on a more generic mihimihi if you don't identify with the sheet sent home.

Thank you.
Michelle Fearon

What a busy term ahead and eleven weeks too!

Miss Grundmann (student teacher) has already settled into room 19 and will be with us for five more weeks.  You'll recognise her as she participated in Shave for a Cure last term and has very short hair now!

Football coaching continues starting on Monday of week 1 for four weeks.  Please remember to wear suitable shoes, no studs thank you.

Swimming will commence in week 2 for 8 weeks at the Aquatics Centre in Paraparaumu. Room 19 will be going with rooms 5 and 18 on Tuesdays for lessons with staff at the centre.  We will leave by bus at 9.10am so please do not be late to school.  Togs, goggles and towels required.  We will be back at school later in the morning. A letter will be sent home asking you about your child's swimming ability for grouping purposes.

Later in the term we will be practicing cross country and orienteering with a chance to go to the inter-schools competitions.

More Science! This term we plan to hold a school wide science fair.  All investigations will be carried out at school.  Watch out for further news on our blog.  We will start our science with looking at teeth - watch out for a free toothbrush and toothpaste coming home!

ANZAC day centenary. During ANZAC week we will be discussing the importance of this celebration.  Any children with stories from families will be welcome to share.

Visual Arts Children will create a personal Pou that represents their heritage, personal beliefs, whanau and whakapap. We will also be creating art for the Matariki celebration and Annual Camellia Art competition.

The circus is coming to town! Well a circus workshop anyway. 12th or 13th of May.  We're looking forward to learning some new skills.

Cartoon workshop. Following our popular writing unit in term 1, a cartoonist will be visiting on 20 May to inspire us further.

RI starts 3 June. Please opt in or out as you prefer. Email or letter from home required.

Arbor Day planting - our usual planting help at Pharazyn Reserve takes place early June.

Matariki celebrations will be held mid June.

Dear Parent                                                                                                                                                                        18 February 2015
Homework and tests
It has been a good start to the year with the children settling down to routines in room 19. Just to clarify the homework requirements:
Reading – children are to read for a minimum of ten minutes and record their reading in their homework book on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening.  Homework books should be handed in on Fridays to be checked. Children who are continually not reading at home will be asked to stay in for part of lunch time on Friday to read.
Spelling – lists are given out on a Monday. Two copies are given out – one to stick in their spelling book at school and one to stick in their homework book. It helps if the homework book is at school on a Monday. Spelling tests are on Friday. Spelling is taught every day so this will help with practice but practice at home too is good.
Maths – I have set Mathletic tasks this week. I usually set them at a weekend or on Monday and hope them to be done by Friday. The tasks relate to what is being taught in class. Sometimes, there is time in class to do some tasks but not always if we are busy. If tasks are continually not done, children will be asked to stay in on a Friday lunchtime to do them.
Next week is test week. We will be testing reading comprehension, vocabulary, listening, writing and maths so it is a full on week.  Therefore I will NOT be setting homework next week. It will commence again in week 5.  The assessments help us to see where each child is at and place them in groups within the class. Groups are not fixed and we realise this is only a snapshot of their learning. However, being well rested seems to help. Children who miss any tests will do them on another day.
Hope this helps. Please come and see me if you have any questions or email m.fearon@waikanae.school.nz

Regards                                Michelle Fearon
